Looking for ways to keep yourself busy on a rainy summer day that doesn’t involve more screen time? Pull out the board games!

Your best friend asks you if you want to play a game, and you reply, “Sure!” She grabs a piece of paper and a couple of pencils. After marking two vertical lines on the paper, she crosses them with two horizontal lines to make a three-by-three grid with nine squares. When she marks an X in the center square, it’s game on!

Board games are a challenge, both in the obvious sense of trying to win the game, and in the sense of trying to win and lose gracefully. I enjoy these challenges, and I enjoy watching my friends face them. You can learn a lot about a person when you see them win and lose.

You probably know Tic-tac-toe  which is also known as noughts and crosses or Xs and Os and is one of my favourite paper and pencil game. No matter what you call it or how you spell it, this is an ancient game that billions of people have played over the course of history.

I am pretty sure people must have got bored because most of the times it’s always a tie or you just lose every time- YES the other one is using the trick or so called Tic-tac- toe strategy.

What people usually do is mark X in the middle.  Then when the opponent puts an O in any corner, mark an X in the next clockwise spot.  If my opponent marks an O in a middle spot, mark an X in the next counter-clockwise spot.  The game will be a tie.

Never give your 1st turn into any sided box because you lose the game. If you give the 1st turn then smartest move is to put it in any corner box – better chance to win. If opponent chose any box unless the middle one, it will be your game. But if he chooses the middle box, here is also a chance for winning. If he chose the middle box, go for the opposite corner box. If he chooses any corner box, you will win the game. If your opponent opens the game, never choose any sided box.

I have got through lectures, thanks to this game. That’s right, my notebook’s last page was full of XOXO ! 😛 What’s your favorite board game ?
